How to Calculate Chip Load
Chip Load Calculator
CLICK HERE to access a comprehensive CHIP LOAD CHART. Note that the information should only be used as benchmark for optimum spindle speed and feed rate selection. Many factors like moisture content, material type, part thickness, and machine rigidity can increase or decrease actual chip load.
Formulas:
Chip Load = Feed Rate / (RPM x Number of Flutes)
Example:
3-Flute Compression MDF/Particle Board
Chip Load = 975 / (12,000 x 3)
= 975 / 36,000
= .027"
3-Flute Compression MDF/Particle Board
Chip Load = 975 / (12,000 x 3)
= 975 / 36,000
= .027"
2-Flute Compression MDF/Particle Board
Chip Load = 975 / (18,000 x 2)
= 975 / 36000
= .027"
Chip Load = 975 / (18,000 x 2)
= 975 / 36000
= .027"
Feed Rate = RPM x Number of Flutes x Chip Load
Example:
3-Flute Compression MDF/Particle Board
Feed Rate = 12,000 x 3 x .027"
= 975 ipm
Feed Rate = 12,000 x 3 x .027"
= 975 ipm
2-Flute Compression MDF/Particle Board
Feed Rate = 18,000 x 2 x .027"
= 975 ipm
Feed Rate = 18,000 x 2 x .027"
= 975 ipm
RPM = Feed Rate / (Number of Flutes x Chip Load)
Example:
3-Flute Compression MDF/Particle Board
RPM = 975 / (3 x .027")
= 975 / .081"
= 12,037
RPM = 975 / (3 x .027")
= 975 / .081"
= 12,037
2-Flute Compression MDF/Particle Board
RPM = 975 / (2 x .027")
= 975 / .054"
= 18,055
RPM = 975 / (2 x .027")
= 975 / .054"
= 18,055
